<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for reducing the cost of a printing device in a host-based print system. <P>SOLUTION: A host machine includes an application, an image processor, and an I/O device. The application generates page data. The image processor receives the page data and renders it to intermediate data including a multi-bit value per plane and per pixel. The I/O device transfers the resulting data to the printing device. The printing device includes an I/O device, a pulse code generator, and a print engine mechanism. The I/O device receives data from the host machine. The pulse code generator receives intermediate data for each of multi-bit values, and generates a pulse code corresponding to the multi-bit value concerned.
