The method involves operating a functional unit (220) by an internal output circuit (213) of a controller (210). Another controller (240) is provided for monitoring of the former controller. The internal output circuit of the former controller is disconnected by the latter controller during identification of a malfunctioning of the former controller. An independent claim is also included for a monitoring device.
