PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sintering machine capable of manufacturing high-strength and high-quality sintered ore safely in high yield while maintaining the blowing height of gas fuel with respect to the upper surface of a charged layer at a prescribed value, as a downward suction type sintering machine, and to provide an operation method of the sintering machine. SOLUTION: The charged layer 9 formed on a pallet circulatively moving is ignited in an ignition furnace and the suction is performed in a wind box arranged on the under side of the pallet. A gas fuel feeding device 12i is arranged in a hood 21 surrounding the upper part of the charged layer 9 arranged on the downstream side of the ignition furnace, and gas fuel is ejected from a plurality of gas fuel ejection nozzles Nj extended in the moving direction of the pallet, is mixed with air and is fed to the charged layer as diluted gas fuel. The gas fuel ejection nozzles Nj are ascendably and descendably supported by blowing height control mechanisms 39U, 39D, a charge height in the width direction is measured by a charge height measuring device disposed on the input side of the hood and, based on the measured charge height of the charged layer, the blowing height of the blowing height control mechanism is controlled by a controller.
