PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber adjustable in damping force, excelling in the control effect of damping force, simple in structure and easily mounted for use. SOLUTION: The shock absorber includes: an upper cap 200 and a lower cap 300; a bottom valve element 400 configured to allow an operating fluid to flow in and out between inner and outer cylinders through different passages in the action of compression and elongation, and adjusted in damping force by a compressive damping force adjusting means 310 mounted to the lower cap through a first by-pass passage BP1 at the center part; a rod 500 provided with a second by-pass passage BP2 connecting an upper chamber to a lower chamber, at one end extended into the inner cylinder, and provided with an elongation force adjusting means in the longitudinal direction to adjust the opening/closing degree of the second by-pass passage; and a piston valve element 600 provided at the end of the rod to face the bottom valve element and determining the flow direction of the operating fluid between the upper chamber and the lower chamber according to the elongation and contraction of the rod.
