PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To start an internal combustion engine even when a temperature of an engine coolant or the like is not properly detected, in the internal combustion engine including a variable compression ratio mechanism. SOLUTION: A spark-ignited internal combustion engine includes the variable compression ratio mechanism which can vary a mechanical compression ratio, and controls the variable compression ratio mechanism so that the mechanical compression ratio becomes a target mechanical compression ratio which is set according to an engine operating condition. When the internal combustion engine is started, the target mechanical compression ratio is varied between a start of a cranking and fuel supply and a start of the internal combustion engine.
