PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch sections to be selected as a characteristic section of a content in accordance with a display attribute. SOLUTION: In a playback device 1, attributes of the display for displaying a content image, such as whether a display is adapted to 3D or not or a size thereof, are detected and sections to be digest playback targets are switched in accordance with detected attributes and the kind of contents whose digest playback is performed. For example, when the content to be played back is a 3D content and the display is a large display adapted to 3D, a section where a visual difference between a left eye image and a right eye image is large is preferentially played back; when the display is not adapted to 3D or is small, a section where many features other than the visual difference are found is preferentially played back.
