The unit has an electric machine (5) e.g. hybrid drive or pure electric drive, producing motive force for traveling of a motor vehicle. An energy storage (27) is connected with the electric machine for supplying energy to the electric machine and for storing the energy delivered by the electric machine. A drive shaft (4) and/or an axle is provided for a wheel of the motor vehicle. The energy storage and/or the electric machine partly fills a building space of the drive shaft and/or the axle. The energy storage consists of multiple lithium cells (8) and/or a lithium ion battery (6).
