The method involves adjusting variable compression ratio (epsilon) of an internal combustion engine e.g. petrol engine, as a function of a signal characterizing volumetric flow of cooling medium i.e. cooling fluid, for cooling the internal combustion engine. The volumetric flow is provided by an adjustable pumping device, and quality of fuel characterizing signal is determined by a detection unit for detecting knocking of the internal combustion engine. The internal combustion engine is adjusted as a function of knocking slant (K) of fuel used for operation of the internal combustion engine.
