摘要 The invention relates to a method whereby mathematical equations representing the electrical neutrality of plasma or blood are coupled with mathematical equations describing plasma or whole blood buffering and an experiment whereby plasma or whole blood is equilibrated at a minimum of two levels of CO2. These equations and this experiment are used to calculate the buffering properties of plasma, and in the case of whole blood separating the buffing properties of plasma and red blood cells. In doing so, calculations can be made of the following values without the need for measurement of the concentration of plasma protein(s): the buffering properties of plasma proteins or plasma non-bicarbonate buffers; plasma albumin or total plasma protein concentration, strong ion gap, and corrected anion gap. Figure 1 is a prior art illustration of an acid-base model applied in the invention.
