Disclosed is an image processing apparatus, wherein a high-resolution feeling of texture is emphasized, while noise in the dark areas of an input image signal is kept down. The image processing apparatus is provided with a high-pass filter (11) that extracts a high-frequency component from an input image signal; a plus/minus sign evaluation unit (12) that evaluates the plus/minus sign of the high-frequency component; a brightness level calculation unit (14) that obtains the brightness value of the input image signal; and a parameter determining unit (gain value determining unit) (13) that determines the parameter (the gain, for example) to be used in the image processing of the high-frequency component, on the basis of the brightness value and the plus/minus sign. When the brightness value of the input image signal is not more than a prescribed value, the parameter determining unit (13) determines the parameter so as to make the degree that an overshoot of a high-frequency component is kept down when the plus/minus sign is plus become higher than the degree that an overshoot of a high-frequency component is kept down when the plus/minus sign is minus.
