<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transverse electric (TE) mode-transverse magnetic (TM) mode converter of a groove structure having a spot size function and a broad tolerance in production error. <P>SOLUTION: The TE-TM mode converter 1 includes a spot size conversion part which is provided by forming a core layer 4 having a rectangular solid whose cross section is W in width and H in thickness in clad layers 5, 6 by using a transparent dielectric material having a refractive index from 1.5 to 1.6, and a groove 7, having a depth D, a width W<SB>1</SB>, and the distance from the sidewall of the core layer of t, extending along the longitudinal direction of the core layer 4, is formed at a part 4a of the core layer 4, which is separated from the light incident face, and the values of W, W<SB>1</SB>, D and t are determined so as to satisfy the relation t+W<SB>1</SB>/2<W/2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT</p> |
