PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus that outputs a binary image whose boundary is expressed according to used colors, for the brightness component of a color image and also for color components (such as hue, a chroma component, and a color difference component). SOLUTION: A first edge extracting section 2 extracts an edge for color components except the brightness of an input color image, and a second edge extracting section 4 extracts an edge for the brightness component of the color image. A synthesizing section 5 synthesizes the edges extracted by the first edge extracting section 2 and the second edge extracting section 4. A gradation conversion section 7 performs gradation conversion on the brightness component of the color image according to edge components synthesized by the synthesizing section 5.
