A method for checking the clear visibility of a camera for an automotive environment is proposed which comprises a step of receiving (101) a camera image and a step of dividing (103) the camera image into a plurality of image elements. A clear visibility value is determined (105) on the basis of a number of objects identified in the respective image element. A clear visibility probability is determined for each of the image elements on the basis of the blindness values and the clear visibility values of the respective image elements.
