A process for preparing urea is described, in which ammonia is reacted with carbon dioxide to give urea. Ammonia is obtained here from silicon nitride/aluminum nitride or silicon nitride/aluminum nitride-containing material and water in the presence of a basic alkali metal and /or alkaline earth metal compound. The silicon nitride/aluminum nitride is obtained by the reaction of SiO2/Al2O3 or SiO2/Al2O3-containing material with gaseous nitrogen with addition of a carbon source, wherein the carbon source used may be the carbon obtained by pyrolysis of biomass. The process can be performed simply and inexpensively and enables particularly effective exploitation of natural resources.
