Organic monomers are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising an inorganic salt of sulphinic acid together with a salt of an organic base and optionally an oxygen-containing compound and/or a small quantity of a heavy metal, e.g. copper, or salt thereof and/or alcohols, e.g. methanol. The polymerization is preferably effected in bulk and in the presence of polymers. Salts of sulphinic acids mentioned are the sodium, potassium or magnesium salts of benzene sulphinic acid, p-toluene sulphinic acid and octyl sulphinic acid. The salts of organic bases may be formed if desired in the polymerizable mixture, from organic and/or inorganic acids and the chosen base. The acid may be present in excess and when an unsaturated organic acid is employed it may participate in the polymerization reaction. Specified bases are aniline, ethylaniline, benzyl methyl amine, p-toluidine, dimethyl-p-toluidine, diphenylamine, 4,41-tetramethyl diamino diphenyl methane, p-amino-dimethylaniline, m-phenylene diamine, monomethyl, monobutyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, dibutyl, benzyl methyl, triethyl, and diphenyl amine, 2-dimethyl aminothiazol, 4,5-diethyl imidazole, betaine, octyl isothiourea, and methyl - phenyl - ethanol amine. Acids mentioned are acrylic, methacrylic, formic, oxalic, acetic, trichloracetic, sulphuric, nitric, p-toluene sulphonic, phosphoric, and maleic. The monomer may be butadiene, chlorobutadiene, phenyl acetylene, styrene, divinyl benzine, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, diallyl diglycol carbonate, triallyl cyanurate, acrylic or methacrylic acid or their esters, e.g. methyl methacrylate, amines, or nitriles, or crotonic acid. Specified oxygen-containing compounds are oxygen, air and p,p1-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide. The process may be employed in dentristry. Specifications 710,534, 710,535, and 734,848 are referred to. |
