The unit (1) has a control module (3) connected with a storage module (4), where the unit retrieves identity feature of a mobile radio telephone (2) after switching on of the telephone. The unit tests whether a set of specialized functions of the telephone is stored in the storage module based on the identity feature. The unit provides the testing result such that another set of specialized functions of the telephone is stored in the storage module. A connection (5) between the unit and the telephone takes place, and operating inputs are carried out by the connection. An independent claim is also included for a method for updating command functions of an external operating unit for operating a mobile radio telephone.
