<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a differential gear capable of rotatably setting output elements, a front and rear wheel drive device using the differential gear, and a control method for the front and rear wheel drive device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This differential device 1 generates a rotational difference between the two output elements. The differential device 1 comprises a planetary gear mechanism assembly 2 formed by combining two planetary gear mechanisms 20a and 20b with each other. In the planetary gear mechanism assembly 2, a carrier 21 is connected to a portion between the planetary gear mechanisms 20a and 20b. The ring gear 22a of one planetary gear mechanism 20a is formed to be rotationally stopped by a brake mechanism 251, and the ring gear 22b of the other planetary gear mechanism 20b is connected to the motor shaft of a differential motor.
