A pharmaceutical combination and method for enhancing the amount of mononuclear cells in a subject suffering from cancer, who is treated with an anti-cancer vaccine. The combination comprises an anti-cancer vaccine eliciting an immune system response in the subject, and a vaccine effectiveness-enhancing amount of an alpha-thymosin peptide, which enhances the immune system response in the subject. The cancer vaccine and the alpha-thymosin peptide can be administered separately or together.
