In a liquid filter having an element 28, Fig. 2, formed with a plurality of doublewalled longitudinal folds 42, Fig. 3, radiating from a central tube 41, the outer edge of at least one fold 42 is bifurcated to provide two double-walled branch folds 44. The filter material 40 comprises resin impregnated paper having corrugations to effect spacing of adjacent walls of the folds and the ends 45, 46 are adhesively sealed to end plates 47, 48. The element as a whole is mounted for inward flow between a support 30 and an inlet and outlet assembly 21 by a hollow perforated tiebolt 24 and nut 23. A spring-pressed ball 35 allows the element 28 to be by-passed in the event of abnormally high back pressure being developed. In a modification alternate folds only are bifurcated. The recesses between branch folds may vary in radial depth, the branch folds 44 may be themselves bifurcated and the tertiary branches so formed may be inclined at different angles to the radius.</p> |
