A water treatment system by means of flocculation is disclosed. The system comprises at least one inlet (1) for water to be treated, at least one flocculation tank (4) into which at least one flocculation reagent is injected via injection means (2) and a means for return of a ballast, such as fine sand, via an injection means (3). A setting tank (5) is provided with means for discharging clarified water (6) as well as a zone (51) for recovering a mixture of sludge and ballast. The system also includes a re-circulation line (7) and at least one measurement sensor (11). The measurement sensor(s) (11) uses comparison means for comparing the measurement of the concentration of ballast with predetermined values. The comparison means is coupled with ballast top-up injection means (3). In use, the ballast coming from a storage means gets activated/deactivated depending upon the comparison of the measurement value with predetermined value.
