An animal tag applicator (1) is disclosed. The applicator comprises a first jaw portion (3) and second jaw portion (7). There are first (2) and second (4) handle portions that are pivotally connected together such that movement together of the handle portions (2, 4) will cause the movement of the jaw portions (3, 7). The applicator also comprises biasing means such as springs (22, 25) which will cause the jaw portions (3, 7) to be in an open position. A linkage means (6) is provided between one of the handle portions (4) and one of the jaw portions (7). The linkage means (6) includes at least a pair of linkage members (15 and 17) pivoted together and movable from a first position to a second position once an over-centre position has been reached. In use, the user squeezes the handles (2, 4) together causing the jaws (3, 7) to close. On further movement of the handles (2, 4), the linkage members (15, 17) moves past the over the centre position and the jaws (3, 7) reopen.
