An apparatus for generating energy is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a high pressure sealable main chamber (1) having an outlet (5) and an inlet (4) located in the vicinity of a base of the main chamber (1). The inlet (4) includes an inlet flow control device (3) having an open position and a closed position. In the open position the liquid can flow into the main chamber (1). The outlet (5) has an opening located at a position which, in use, is below the level of liquid in the main chamber (1). The apparatus further comprises at least one energy conversion device that is configured to extract energy from the flow of liquid into, out of or through the main chamber (1). The method of generating energy comprises the following steps: a) Inserting a resilient material into the main chamber (1) and sealing it; b) Locating the inlet (4) of the main chamber (1) at a depth within a body of liquid; c) Setting the inlet flow control device (3) to an open position to enable the liquid to flow into the main chamber (1) this compressing the resilient material d) Setting the inlet flow control device (3) to the closed position to enable the resilient material in the main chamber (1) to expand and displace at least some of the liquid in the main chamber out through the outlet (5) e) Repeating steps c) and d) to create a flow of fluid and resilient material through the main chamber (1); and f) Extracting the energy from the flow of the liquid through the main chamber (1), and/or flow of the liquid into or out of the main chamber (1).
