Catalyst particles holding down involves feeding reactive gas into a reactor, which has a catalyst bed (2) loaded with solid catalyst particles or solid substrate particles. The solid substrate particle has a catalyst or is coated with a catalytically active material. The catalyst particles are held back in the reactor by using a holding device. The holding device is made of layer element (1) material from a solid body of open-porous porous material with coincidental pores. The holding device is impermeable to catalyst particles and permeable for reaction gas. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for holding down catalyst particles, which comprises gas-permeable layer elements.
