PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color separation optical system which is relatively inexpensive, and also can obtain an image having no difference of color reproducibility between a center and a peripheral part of the image. SOLUTION: In the color separation optical system which separates luminous flux made incident from an incident surface into color components of a plurality of wavelength bands and emits them from respective emission surfaces, a dichroic film for reflecting and separating respective color light beams and a trimming filter for trimming respective separated color light beams are formed on a substrate, and the dichroic film and the trimming filter are constituted by alternately laminating a high-refractive index layer having a refractive index (N<SB>H</SB>) and a low-refractive index layer having a refractive index (N<SB>L</SB>) on the substrate having a refractive index (N<SB>S</SB>) where refractive indexes (N<SB>H</SB>), (N<SB>L</SB>) and (N<SB>S</SB>) satisfy conditions of 1.8<N<SB>H</SB><2.41, 3<N<SB>L</SB><1.5, N<SB>H</SB>/N<SB>L</SB>=1.57 to 1.581, and 4<N<SB>S</SB><1.9.
