PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide activated carbon with a high-specific surface area useful as an adsorbent suitable for an application to adsorb and recover lower alcohols in a low-concentration solution. SOLUTION: The activated carbon obtained by impregnating lignins with an alkaline metal carbonate salt and then heating the lignins in an inert gas at a temperature of≥700°C has a high specific surface area, and a high adsorption power to lower alcohols.
