PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a balancing device of a machine tool, capable of largely reducing frictional force working between a rod member and a seal member and preventing a drop in machining accuracy. SOLUTION: The balancing device 10 of a machine tool includes a gas spring 11 for supporting at least a part of a weight of a spindle head 5 provided so as to be able to move up/down on a column 3 of the machine tool 1. The gas spring 11 includes a cylinder body 12, a gas storage chamber filled with a compressed gas in the cylinder body, and the rod member 14 which receives a gas pressure of the gas storage chamber, extends downward out of the cylinder body and can move closer to/farther away from the cylinder body 12. The balancing device of the machine tool has an electric motor mounted on a body frame 2 of the machine tool 1, and is equipped with a rotary driving means 15 capable of inputting rotary driving force to the lower end of the rod member 14, and a thrust bearing mechanism 16 for supporting axial force working to the rod member 14 on the body frame 2 of the machine tool 1.
