The method involves inserting a locking ring (11) with a cutting edge in to a die (7). Mold parts (8, 9), which are made of metal or plastic, are positioned on the die and under an extrusion die (6). A punching rivet (1) with a rivet head is held at a lower end of the extrusion die. The punching rivet is punched by the mold parts by the extrusion die. The ring is deformed such that material of the ring is pressed in to annular groove (5). The ring is firmly seated at the rivet during separation of the extrusion die and the die so that the mold parts are firmly joined with one another. An independent claim is also included for a locking ring for mechanical joining of lower and upper mold parts.
