PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that adjusts a position of a document surface to be conveyed in a reading position in accordance with the focus position of an image reading means so as to suppress deterioration in reading resolution as much as possible, and also to provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The image reader reads images of documents D conveyed sheet by sheet in a reading position B by a contact type image sensor 40. The sensor 40 has a reading glass 46 and a reference guide member 47 to be stuck to the reading glass 46. The reference guide member 47 has a thickness corresponding to the focus position of the sensor 40, and the imaging surface of a document D is conveyed within a range of focus depth of the sensor 40.
