The method involves generating signals (20, 22) characterizing a rotational position of a cam shaft of an internal combustion engine. A rotational position (14) of a crankshaft is determined based on the signals of a detection unit, where the detection unit is attached to the cam shaft. Values characterizing the rotational position of the crankshaft are determined based on the signals of the detection unit attached to the cam shaft and to the crankshaft, respectively. One of the values is corrected based on the other value.
