PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a phosphorus-containing epoxy resin having excellent low viscosity property and flame retardancy, and to provide a curable resin composition and the cured product of the composition, the composition containing a curing agent and the phosphorus-containing epoxy resin obtained by the method. SOLUTION: The production method includes reacting an epoxy resin (A) which is formed from at least one of an epoxy resin (a1) derived from a dihydric alcohol having an aromatic ring, an epoxy resin (a2) derived from a dihydric alcohol having a cyclohexane ring, and an epoxy resin (a3) derived from tri- or tetra-hydric alcohol having no ring, with an organophosphorus compound (B) which comprises an organophosphorus compound (b1) having a hydroxy group and/or an organophosphorus compound (b2) having no hydroxy group to produce a phosphorus-containing epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent of 200 to 600 g/eq and a phosphorus content of 1 to 6 wt.%. In the method, the epoxy resin (A) has hydroxy group concentration of 200 meq/100 g or less, a total chlorine content of 0.4 wt.% or less, and anα-diol content of 10 meq/100 g or less.
