PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the breakage of a lens barrel, when an operation for escaping from a state where the lens barrel can not be extended is performed. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus including a photographing mode in which the lens barrel is put into a photographing state and a non-photographing mode in which the lens barrel is put into a housed state includes: a drive means for driving the lens barrel into the photographing state or the housed state; a determination means for determining whether or not the lens barrel is shifted to the operation from the housed state to the photographing state by drive by the drive means; and a control means for controlling the drive of the drive means for the operation from the non-operation state to the photographing state, when it is determined that the lens barrel is not shifted to the operation by the determination means and for controlling the drive of the drive means so as to stop the operation of the lens barrel into the photographing state, when it is determined that the lens barrel is shifted to the operation by the determination means and the operation of the lens barrel into the photographing state is restricted.
