PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the responsiveness of a cam phase variable mechanism by restricting accumulation of an operating fluid inside a housing part of the cam phase variable mechanism for reduction in friction. SOLUTION: An engine with a variable valve gear includes a hydraulic second cam phase variable mechanism 31, which changes a phase of a second intake cam 12, at the end of an intake cam shaft 4. The second cam phase variable mechanism 31 is housed in an actuator cover 40 formed with a space 43 different from a space 51, which is formed inside a cylinder head 2, being separated with a rear wall 2a inside thereof, and the rear wall 2a is formed with an oil passage 50 communicating the space 43 with the space 51.
