The electric machine has a slip-ring rotor comprising rotor windings and a slip ring (1) that contacts the rotor windings. A brush (3) is connected on the slip ring by electric current, and the brush is lifted from the slip ring by a brush removal device. The rotor windings are short-circuited by a short circuit device according to need. The short circuit device includes a magnetic device, and the rotor windings are mechanically short-circuited by the magnetic device independent of the brush removal device. The brush is guided in a shaft or a leg (2).
