PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an earthenware such as a sanitary ware lightweight and low in water absorption. SOLUTION: The lightweight earthenware is formed from a sintered compact green body comprising a crystal phase consisting essentially of at least mullite, quartz and anorthite as principal components and a glass phase consisting essentially of SiO<SB>2</SB>and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, has many independent pores formed to be surrounded by the anorthite in the sintered compact green body and has 2.0-2.4 g/cm<SP>3</SP>bulk density.
