摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having superior sharpness. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element includes a first substrate which has a first electrode and is subjected to alignment treatment in a first direction; a second substrate which is disposed parallel to and opposite to the first substrate, has a second electrode, and is subjected to alignment treatment in a second direction; and a liquid crystal layer which is disposed between the first and the second substrates, contains a chiral material, and has liquid crystal molecules twist-aligned. The second direction forms an angle of 70 to 110°with respect to the first direction in a first rotational direction, when viewed from a normal direction on the first substrate side; a liquid crystal material is twisted in the first rotational direction by alignment treatment; the chiral material gives turning ability in a second rotational direction opposite to the first rotational direction along a direction from the first substrate toward the second substrate when viewed from the normal direction on the first substrate side, to the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer; and the first and the second substrates are subjected to alignment treatment so as to exhibit a pretilt angleθgreater than 0°and equal to or less than 5°. If the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is d and the chiral pitch of the chiral material is p, the formulas: 2≤p/d<4 and -2°≤θ(p/d)≤2°are satisfied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
