Hearing apparatus is provided comprising one or more audio input devices (10a, 10b); and signal processing apparatus (2) configured to: receive an audio signal from the audio input devices, the audio signal corresponding to a mixed sound signal generated by a plurality of sound sources; separate the audio signal into a plurality of subcomponent electrical audio signals, each subcomponent electrical audio signal corresponding to a part of the mixed sound signal generated by a subset of the plurality of sound sources; and deliver each subcomponent electrical audio signal to a selected one of a plurality of hearing devices (31, 32) of a recipient, the selection of the hearing device for each subcomponent electrical audio signal being based on one or more characteristics of the subcomponent electrical audio signal. One or more perceptual properties of the subcomponent electrical audio signals may be enhanced to promote better perceptual segregation by the listener.
