The vehicle (1) has a track sensor system (11) determining height of a track (3). The sensor system generates correlated track signals. An evaluating device determines target spring preload to be adjusted at individual spring mechanisms (3) depending upon the signals, where suspension strut paths and/or suspension rebound paths of the mechanisms are smaller than spring path to reach a bouncing stop (7) and/or releasing stop (8). A control device (9) maintains the preload, and operates an adjusting device (6) for adjustment of the preload. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a road vehicle.
