The method involves temporally weighing a particle filter (12) before and after burning of sooty particles present in the particle filter. The load capacity of the particle filter determined by the weighing is compared with a load capacity of the particle filter that is determined by using computer model. Before weighing of the loaded particle filter a vehicle having the particle filter is operated according an operating profile of a predetermined driving cycle.
