PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately perform focus detection, based on the phase difference information detected in one direction. SOLUTION: The focus detector includes a defocus information detection means 4, that detects the phase difference information of a pair of images formed with a pair of luminous fluxes passing through different areas of a photographic optical system 1 and detects defocus information based on the phase difference information; and a correction means 4, that corrects the detected defocus information, corresponding to a predetermined direction between a first direction orthogonal to an optical axis of the photographic optical system 1 and running radially from the optical axis, with a second direction orthogonal to the first direction.
