PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a recovery work when a read error occurs, in a hardness tester for automatically measuring a Vickers hardness. SOLUTION: This hardness tester 1 is equipped with: a photographing section 7 for photographing a recess image; a data storage section 133; an automatic dimension reading program 134 for reading the dimension of the recess; and a hardness calculation program 135. The hardness tester 1 is also equipped with: an identification information providing program 131 for providing sample identification information and recess identification information to image data; a storage control program 132 for associating the identification information with the image data and storing it; a specifying program 136 for specifying the identification information of image data where a read error occurs when the error occurs; an acquisition program 137 for acquiring the image data from the data storage part 133 based on the specified identification information; and a re-reading means (display section 8, operation section 9, and manual dimension calculating program 138) for re-reading the dimension of the recess from the acquired image data.
