PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carboxyl-containing polymer, excellent in the dispersibility or the like of an inorganic substance, exhibiting the dispersibility with a sufficient lapse of time. SOLUTION: The polymer is such as to be produced by batch-type polymerization of a salt-type carboxyl-containing monomer as the main component. The weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of the polymer at the end of the polymerization is 2,000-50,000. A method for producing the polymer is characterized by comprising the following process: in a period of time of 5-10% of a time during which the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer under polymerization is less than 3,000, polymerization in the coexistence of an acid-type carboxyl-containing monomer and a salt-type carboxyl-containing monomer is carried out.
