PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an asymmetric biphenyltetracarboxylic acid tetraester, comprising oxidation-coupling a phthalic acid diester in the presence of molecular oxygen using a palladium-bearing catalyst and the phthalic acid diester to continuously produce the asymmetric biphenyltetracarboxylic acid tetraester, which can be performed with a simple apparatus in simple operations in high productivity at a low cost, while holding high catalyst efficiency (catalyst turnover frequency). SOLUTION: The method for producing the asymmetric biphenyltetracarboxylic acid tetraester includes continuously or intermittently supplying a phthalic acid diester, a catalyst component comprising at least a palladium compound and a copper salt in an amount of 2 to 20 times (in mole) the palladium compound, and molecular oxygen, to the first reaction region, in a reaction apparatus whose liquid phase portion has one or more reaction regions, continuously or intermittently taking out a part of the reaction mixture solution from the first reaction region, and simultaneously performing the oxidation dimerization reaction of the phthalic acid diester.
