PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating position detector, which determines an operating position with a fewer angle detection sensors than the number of operating positions that are objects to be detected, and gives a good operational feeling to a user. SOLUTION: A shift position detector 1 is mainly equipped with: a first and a second magnet 10a, 10b; a first to a sixth MR sensor 11-16; and a control section 17. The control section 17 determines the position in a first route 51, based on the combination of the Hi and Low output from the first to fourth MR sensor 11-14 with Low output of the fifth and sixth MR sensor 15, 16, and the position in a second route 53, based on the combination of the Hi and Low output of the first to fourth MR sensor 11-14, with the output Hi of the fifth and sixth MR sensor 15, 16.
