PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately acquire the front edge position of a document using the front edge shadow without depending on the thickness of the document. SOLUTION: A scanner recognizes the front edge shadow of a document on a projected screen 36 through an image sensor 34 when light of a light source 32 is emitted onto the front edge of the document which is automatically fed on a glass board 22, and then determines that the document reaches a reading position when automatically feeding the document by a specified feeding amount after the recognition of its shadow. The projected screen 36 is arranged above the glass board 22 and fixed at a position apart from the image sensor 34 by a specified distance, so that the timing when the front edge shadow of the document is projected on the screen 36 is constant without depending on the document thickness.
