PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine with a variable valve timing mechanism improving workability while enhancing a freedom degree of arrangement of an oil passage and improving mountability of a hydraulic control valve with respect to a chain case. SOLUTION: In the engine with the variable valve timing mechanism, a block independent of the chain case is arranged between an inner surface wall of the chain case and an end wall of a cylinder head, an intermediate oil passage penetrating the inside of the block and communicating an oil passage on the chain case side and an oil passage on the cylinder head side is formed in the block, and the intermediate oil passage has a communication port opened to a joint surface with the chain case of the block and a communication port opened to a joint surface of the cylinder head of the block, and the one communication port is offset with respect to a position opposed to the other communication port.
