Di(aralkyl)peroxides of the formula <FORM:0789116/IV (b)/1> where R1 and R6 are aryl or alkaryl groups and R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or alkyl groups of less than 4 carbon atoms, may be prepared by condensing the corresponding hydroperoxides and alcohols (preferably in slight excess) at 50 DEG to 120 DEG C. in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as p-toluene sulphonic acid.ALSO:Polymers of ethylene are cross-linked by incorporating a minor amount of a di-(aralkyl) peroxide of the formula <FORM:0789116/IV (a)/1> where R1 and R6 are aryl or alkaryl groups and R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or alkyl groups of less than 4 carbon atoms, e.g. bis-(a ,a -dimethyl benzyl), bis-(a ,a -dimethyl-p-isopropylbenzyl) and bis-(a ,a -dimethyl-p-methylbenzyl) peroxides, and heating. A list of di-(aralkyl) peroxides is given. Incorporation may be effected by milling the polymer granules on rolls at 100 DEG to 125 DEG C. and adding the peroxide to the fused polymer in proportions between 0.1 and 10 per cent. Heat and light stabilizers, fillers, lubricants, pigments, dyes, anti-static agents, resins and elastomers may be added. Heating may be carried out at from 130 DEG to 180 DEG F., preferably simultaneously with shaping, e.g. by compression or injection moulding, to yield products insoluble in hot xylene and with reduced flow.
