PURPOSE: A letter area extracting device and method thereof are provided to effectively distinguish the letter area by exactly calculating a width of the letter stroke. CONSTITUTION: A letter candidate area detecting unit(100) generates a binary image including the letter candidate area from an original image. A letter outline information obtaining unit(110) extracts an outline of the letter from the letter candidate area and obtains letter outline information about the outline. A letter area information obtaining unit(120) uses the letter outline information and sets pixels which constitutes the outline and representative letter stroke and angle. A letter area determining unit(130) determines area existing the letter form the letter candidate area.
