In a magnetic amplifier with a load winding energized by alternate spaced negative and positive going power pulses, a rectifier in series with the load winding and load is biased so as to permit direct current in a control winding to set the core during the zero voltage spaces between power pulses. The bias may be provided by a battery, a condenser in parallel with an impedance or by a non-linear impedance. Two biased and oppositely poled rectifiers may be connected in parallel and the combination be placed in series with the load winding and load, or as shown in Fig. 10a, two separate load impedances may be employed, one in series with each of the rectifiers. A condenser in parallel with each of these load impedances may provide the bias for the rectifiers in place of the batteries 20, 21. Alternatively again, as shown in Fig. 11b, a, single load impedance 30 energized over oppositely poled rectifiers 18 and 19 and impedances 31, 32, has capacitors 24 and 25 connected across it to provide bias for each rectifier. The alternating pulse power supply may be rectified as shown in Fig. 12, a capacitor across the load 36 providing a bias for the rectifiers of a bridge circuit. The bridge circuit may feed a number of separate amplifiers in parallel. In each embodiment an A.C. cross bias may be provided to give a zero origin for the load versus control current characteristic.
