Chlorous acid is prepared by treating its salts with hydrogen from an ion exchange process. In an an example, a 10 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid was added to a resinous ionexchange material such as one sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Lewatit" or "Amberlite" and the material washed to remove any chlorine present. After an hour, a 1 per cent aqueous solution of sodium chlorite was passed through the material to produce a stable 1 per cent solution of chlorous acid. Specification 791,680 is referred to.ALSO:Water or sewage is purified or sterilized by adding free chlorous acid thereto, preferably in aqueous solution. The chlorous acid is prepared by treating its salts with hydrogen from an ion exchange process. 20 ml. of a 1 per cent solution thus prepared destroyed the bacteria present in 100 litres of river water in 5 minutes. The action can be accelerated by adding acidic substances or retarded by basic ones. Specification 791,680 [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:Water is sterilized by chlorous acid, preferably in aqueous solution, prepared by treating its salts with hydrogen in an ion-exchange process. 20 ml. of a 1 per cent solution of the acid thus prepared destroys the bacteria present in 100 litres of river water in 5 minutes.
