The unit has a low level detector (9a) and a high level detector (11a) sending a liquid presence signal to a pump unit control housing (7a). The housing operates the unit when the housing receives the presence signal from the low level detector until the housing receives a stop signal from the unit. The housing does not operate the unit when the housing receives the presence signal from the high level detector, and operates the unit until the housing receives a liquid absence signal from the unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a pumping station with the pump units.
